Ice before the needle: simple trick to beat root canal pain?
NCT ID NCT07517367
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether placing an ice pack on the gum for 5 minutes before a numbing injection can improve pain control during root canal treatment. It involves 98 adults with severe, irreversible tooth nerve pain. The goal is to see if this simple cold therapy reduces the need for extra numbing shots and makes the procedure more comfortable.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
intraoral cryotherapy (ice packs applied to the gum)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to make dental numbing more effective for people with severe tooth pain.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial. The benefit may be small or not apply to all patients. Ice packs can cause temporary discomfort or cold sensitivity.
