Can a home therapy program stop repeat falls in dementia patients?
NCT ID NCT06237218
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests a program called COTID, where an occupational therapist visits the homes of older adults with dementia who have recently been hospitalized for a fall. The therapist helps make the home safer and trains the caregiver to support the patient. The goal is to see if this reduces the chance of another fall or rehospitalization over the next year. The study involves 76 participants aged 75 and older, along with their caregivers.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
COTID program (behavioral intervention: home-based occupational therapy with caregiver support)
What this could lead to
If it works, this program could help older adults with dementia avoid repeat falls and stay safely at home longer.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 76 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The program requires a dedicated caregiver, which may limit its use.
