First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will test whether applying a special heat-reflecting coating to roofs can improve the health and well-being of 800 households in Colima, Mexico. The coating is designed to keep homes cooler indoors, which may help lower heart rate, improve blood sugar control, reduce depression, and prevent heat-related illnesses. Researchers will also measure effects on indoor temperature, energy costs, and quality of life.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a simple, low-cost roof coating can reduce heat-related health problems and improve well-being in hot climates.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively early-stage trial with 800 participants, and results may not apply to other regions or populations. The intervention only addresses indoor heat, not other causes of the health conditions measured.
