Can a wearable glucose monitor keep hospital patients safer?

NCT ID NCT04230694

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tested whether continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) can help manage blood sugar in hospitalized adults with diabetes. Forty patients wore a Dexcom G6 device during their hospital stay to track glucose levels. The goal was to see if CGM could reduce dangerous low or high blood sugar events compared to standard care. Results may show whether this technology is practical and effective for routine hospital use.

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Dexcom Generation 6 CGM device

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that continuous glucose monitoring is a practical and effective way to manage blood sugar in hospitalized patients, reducing dangerous low and high blood sugar events.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to all hospital settings. The device may not be as accurate in sicker patients or those on certain medications.
