Online brain games for dementia: new study tests if virtual therapy can keep minds sharp
NCT ID NCT05860127
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a virtual group therapy program called Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (V-CST) could help slow cognitive decline in people with mild to moderate dementia. 133 participants were randomly assigned to either receive a referral for V-CST or continue with standard care. The therapy involves online group activities designed to stimulate thinking and memory. The study focused on whether people would accept the referral and whether their cognitive scores changed over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) - a group therapy program delivered online
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a non-drug way to help people with dementia maintain their thinking skills longer.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (133 people) testing whether the approach is acceptable and practical, not whether it definitively works. Results may not apply to everyone with dementia.
