New Clot-Busting technique could reduce Long-Term leg damage
NCT ID NCT06124768
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new approach to remove blood clots from deep leg veins in people with acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The standard method accesses the vein behind the knee, while the new method uses veins in the calf or the opposite leg. Researchers want to see if the new approach works just as well and reduces the risk of post-thrombotic syndrome, a condition causing chronic leg pain and swelling. About 210 adults with recent DVT will take part.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (a procedure to remove blood clots using a catheter-based device)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could establish a safer, more effective way to remove blood clots in the leg, potentially lowering the chance of long-term complications like chronic leg pain and swelling.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively small, early-stage study (210 participants) comparing surgical techniques, so results may not apply to all patients. The procedure itself carries risks like bleeding, vessel damage, or clot fragments traveling to the lungs.
