New sensor could replace painful finger pricks for ICU patients

NCT ID NCT04910841

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) designed for diabetes can work in intensive care patients with septic shock. Currently, nurses must prick patients' fingers every 2 hours to check blood sugar, which is painful and disruptive. The CGM uses a small sensor placed on the skin to measure sugar levels automatically every 5 minutes. The study will enroll 55 patients to see if the device is accurate and practical in this setting.
