Heart drug showdown: which Beta-Blocker best protects ICD patients?
NCT ID NCT06964464
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study compares two common heart failure medications, carvedilol and metoprolol succinate, in 2,000 adults who have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Participants currently taking metoprolol will be randomly assigned to either stay on it or switch to carvedilol. Researchers will track which group has fewer heart-related hospitalizations, ICD shocks, or deaths over up to 3 years. The goal is to find out if one drug works better for this specific group of patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- carvedilol and metoprolol succinate (beta-blocker drugs)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could show which beta-blocker is better at preventing heart-related hospitalizations, ICD shocks, or death in heart failure patients with an ICD.
- What could go wrong
- This is a Phase 4 trial, so both drugs are already approved, but the study is open-label (not blinded), which may introduce bias. Results may not apply to all heart failure patients.
