Heart attack study halted: could conditioning the heart and arm help?

NCT ID NCT03155022

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether using two types of 'ischemic conditioning' (brief cycles of blood flow restriction and release) could improve outcomes for people having a major heart attack. One method used a blood pressure cuff on the arm, the other used a balloon inside the heart artery during stent placement. The trial was stopped early, so we don't have clear answers on whether this combined approach helps patients recover better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ischemic conditioning (remote and intracoronary)

What this could lead to

If it had succeeded, this approach could have pointed toward a way to reduce heart damage and improve recovery after a heart attack.

What could go wrong

The trial was terminated early, so results are limited. It is unclear if the combined conditioning provides any real benefit, and the approach may not work for all patients.
