Heart attack drug targets tiny vessels, not blockages

NCT ID NCT05198791

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether eplerenone, a drug used for high blood pressure and heart failure, can help people who have had a heart attack or heart injury but no blocked arteries. Many of these patients have damage to tiny blood vessels in the heart. The study will involve 400 adults in Scotland. Participants with small vessel problems will either get eplerenone or usual care for six months. The main goal is to see if the drug reduces heart injury markers and improves heart function.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Eplerenone (a tablet that reduces blood vessel injury, used for high blood pressure and heart failure)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a treatment for heart damage caused by small vessel problems after a heart attack.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 400 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The drug may not reduce heart injury or improve outcomes as hoped.
