Gum disease mystery: could a fungus be making it worse?

NCT ID NCT07574827

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is checking how often the fungus Candida albicans shows up in the gums of 100 Syrian adults with periodontitis (serious gum disease). Researchers will collect plaque samples and measure gum health to see if the fungus is linked to more severe disease. The goal is to better understand what role Candida plays in gum disease in this population.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If this study finds a link, it could point toward better ways to manage periodontitis by also targeting fungal infections.

What could go wrong

This is a small, observational study in one country, so results may not apply elsewhere. It only measures prevalence, not treatment effects.
