Toothache relief: could a common painkiller beat standard root canal medicine?
NCT ID NCT07237620
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two medications placed inside the tooth after a failed root canal: standard calcium hydroxide and the painkiller diclofenac sodium. Sixty patients with persistent infection around the tooth root will be randomly assigned to one of the two treatments. Healing will be measured by changes in bone patterns on X-rays taken before and 12 months after treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- calcium hydroxide and diclofenac sodium
- What this could lead to
- If this works, it could show that diclofenac sodium is a better option than standard calcium hydroxide for healing bone around the tooth root after a failed root canal.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study with only 60 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. The main measure is a change in bone pattern on X-rays, not a direct symptom check, and the 12-month follow-up may not capture long-term outcomes.
