Can a vitamin d gel or light therapy stop precancerous mouth lesions?

NCT ID NCT07658508

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a vitamin D-based gel (calcipotriol) or a light-activated treatment (photodynamic therapy) can shrink or eliminate oral leukoplakia, a precancerous condition. Thirty adults with mild to moderate dysplasia will receive one of the two treatments for four weeks and be monitored for three months. Researchers will also check if the treatments reduce certain inflammatory markers in saliva.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

calcipotriol gel and photodynamic therapy

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a non-surgical treatment for oral leukoplakia, potentially lowering the risk of oral cancer.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 30 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatments might not shrink lesions or could cause side effects like irritation.
