Burns disrupt skin and gut bacteria – scientists track the fallout

NCT ID NCT07209007

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study follows 600 burn patients and 60 healthy people over two years to see how burns change the community of microbes on the skin and in the gut. Researchers will collect swabs, stool, and blood samples at several time points to map these changes. The goal is to better understand how microbial imbalances affect healing and long-term recovery after a burn injury.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could reveal how microbes affect burn recovery, pointing toward future treatments to improve skin healing.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study, not a treatment trial. It only measures changes, so it cannot prove any therapy works. Results may not lead to direct patient benefits.
