New catheter could give doctors Second-by-Second brain oxygen readings after cardiac arrest

NCT ID NCT06511999

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

After a cardiac arrest, many patients remain comatose and are at risk of further brain injury. Doctors currently measure brain oxygen by drawing blood from the jugular vein and sending it to a lab, which takes time. This study tests a special catheter that can measure oxygen levels continuously, right at the bedside. Researchers will enroll 25 comatose patients to see if the new method is accurate compared to standard lab tests.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

PediaSat Oximetry Catheter (device)

What this could lead to

If accurate, this catheter could give doctors real-time brain oxygen data, helping them detect and treat secondary brain injury faster in comatose patients after cardiac arrest.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early feasibility study with only 25 participants at one hospital. The catheter may not prove accurate enough, and results may not apply to all patients.
