Scientists probe Brain's consciousness switch during anesthesia

NCT ID NCT04502550

First seen Jun 09, 2026 · Last updated Jun 18, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study looked at how anesthesia changes brain activity in people with Parkinson's disease or essential tremor who were already scheduled for deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. Researchers recorded brain signals during a short period of anesthesia to understand which circuits control consciousness. The goal was to learn more about how the brain loses and regains awareness, not to test a new treatment.
