New brain scans aim to spot inflammation in MS and Alzheimer's

NCT ID NCT02649985

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study uses special PET scans to look for brain inflammation in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) and Alzheimer's disease. Researchers will compare two radioactive tracers, [F-18]PBR06 and [C-11]PBR28, to see which works better. Up to 250 participants, including healthy volunteers, will undergo imaging to understand how inflammation relates to disease severity and symptoms. The goal is to improve detection and monitoring of these neurological conditions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

[F-18]PBR06 and [C-11]PBR28 (radioactive tracers for PET scans)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could improve how we detect and monitor brain inflammation in MS and Alzheimer's, potentially leading to better diagnosis and treatment tracking.

What could go wrong

This is an early-phase imaging study, not a treatment trial. It may not directly lead to new therapies, and the tracers may not prove superior to existing methods.
