Can brain scans predict memory loss after Parkinson's surgery?

NCT ID NCT05822388

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks for brain scan markers that might predict thinking and memory changes after Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in people with Parkinson's disease. Researchers will use MRI scans before surgery and cognitive tests after surgery in 55 Parkinson's patients, plus compare them to 25 healthy controls. The goal is to better understand why some people experience cognitive decline after DBS.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors predict which Parkinson's patients might experience memory or thinking problems after Deep Brain Stimulation, allowing for better treatment planning.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It aims to understand cognitive decline, not prevent or reverse it. Results may not apply to all patients.
