Artificial blood could save trauma victims when banked blood is scarce
NCT ID NCT05756426
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study aims to create a whole blood substitute by combining artificial oxygen carriers, plasma, and platelets. Researchers will test these mixtures in the lab using blood from 250 healthy volunteers to see if they can match the performance of real blood. The goal is to have a product that can be used in emergencies, like on battlefields or in remote areas, where banked blood is not available.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
artificial blood components (oxygen carrier, plasma analogue, platelet analogue)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a field-ready blood substitute that saves lives in trauma situations where real blood is not available.
What could go wrong
This is an early laboratory study with healthy volunteers donating blood for testing, not a treatment trial. The artificial blood may not work as well as real blood or could have unexpected side effects.
