Can a drug and a stent change bladder cancer recovery?
NCT ID NCT06703476
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at two common choices during bladder cancer removal surgery: using a ureteral stent (a tube to drain urine) and giving the drug alvimopan to help the bowels work sooner. The goal is to see if these choices affect how long patients stay in the hospital and how many get urinary tract infections. About 530 adults having bladder cancer surgery will take part, and their surgeons will decide the best approach when unsure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
alvimopan
What this could lead to
If successful, this trial could show that using alvimopan and avoiding stents shortens hospital stays and reduces infections after bladder cancer surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a large phase 3 trial, but it tests variations of standard care, not a new cure. Results may not apply to all hospitals or patients.
