Could poking holes in cysts stop them coming back?

NCT ID NCT07385560

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding a procedure called fenestration (making small holes in the cyst wall) to standard aspiration and steroid injection can improve outcomes for people with painful Baker's cysts behind the knee. Forty-four adults with knee osteoarthritis and a Baker's cyst will be randomly assigned to receive either standard treatment or standard treatment plus fenestration. Researchers will measure cyst size, pain, and recurrence over three months to see if fenestration helps more.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

steroid-lidocaine injection and fenestration procedure

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a more effective, minimally invasive treatment for Baker's cysts that reduces the chance of the cyst coming back.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 44 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The fenestration technique is new and may not provide additional benefit over standard care.
