Aspirin study for kidney patients halted early – did the risks outweigh the benefits?
NCT ID NCT03796156
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at whether taking a daily low-dose aspirin could help people with chronic kidney disease avoid their first heart attack or stroke. Over 4,600 participants were randomly assigned to take aspirin or receive usual care. The trial was stopped early, and the final results are not yet clear. Aspirin can reduce blood clots but also raises the chance of dangerous bleeding.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Aspirin (low-dose, 75 mg)
What this could lead to
If it had succeeded, this could have shown that daily low-dose aspirin safely reduces the risk of first heart attack or stroke in people with chronic kidney disease.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early, so results are limited. Aspirin also increases bleeding risk, which may outweigh benefits in this population.
