Scientists hunt for biomarkers to personalize ventilator care in ARDS

NCT ID NCT07380997

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This observational study will analyze blood and sputum samples from 411 adults with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) who are on ventilators. Researchers will look for patterns in microbes, metabolites, and gene activity to see if they can predict how well patients respond to ventilation and their 28-day survival. The goal is to find biomarkers that could one day guide personalized ventilator strategies.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could identify molecular markers that help doctors personalize ventilator settings for ARDS patients, potentially improving survival.

What could go wrong

This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not lead to any direct clinical changes, and the findings might not apply to all ARDS patients.
