Could a simple antibiotic combo save more newborns?

NCT ID NCT07183462

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 31 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding azithromycin to the usual antibiotic (ampicillin) improves health outcomes for newborns when a woman's water breaks early (between 34 and 37 weeks of pregnancy). About 311 women will receive either ampicillin alone or ampicillin plus azithromycin while in the hospital until delivery. The goal is to reduce serious newborn complications like breathing problems, infections, or the need for intensive care.
