Could a natural hormone help people with obesity burn more calories?

NCT ID NCT03777215

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This early-stage study tests whether a hormone called angiotensin-(1-7) can increase how many calories people with obesity burn while resting. Thirty adults with a BMI between 30 and 40 will receive the hormone or a placebo (saline) through an IV. Researchers will measure changes in energy use and look for signs of heat production in fat tissue.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Angiotensin-(1-7)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to help people with obesity burn more calories at rest.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply broadly. It is designed to test a theory, not to prove a treatment works.
