Protein building blocks tested to fight muscle wasting in kidney patients

NCT ID NCT07437053

First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 16, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study tests whether taking branched-chain amino acids (the building blocks of protein) can safely improve muscle mass and strength in 20 adults aged 45-75 with advanced chronic kidney disease who also have muscle loss (sarcopenia). Participants will take the supplements for 6 weeks while researchers measure handgrip strength, muscle mass, and walking speed. The goal is to find a way to treat muscle wasting without overloading the kidneys with protein.
