AI app could replace physiotherapist for knee pain relief
NCT ID NCT05173064
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether an AI-powered app can guide people with knee osteoarthritis through exercises at home, reducing pain and improving function as well as in-person physiotherapy. About 176 adults aged 50 and older with knee pain will be split into two groups: one receiving standard face-to-face physiotherapy, and the other using the AI app after an initial session. The goal is to see if the app can offer a cheaper, more accessible way to manage knee OA symptoms.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
AI-powered exercise app (Technological Surrogate Physiotherapist)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a convenient, low-cost alternative to in-person physiotherapy for managing knee osteoarthritis pain and function.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (176 participants) comparing an app to standard care. The AI may not match the benefits of hands-on therapy, and results may not apply to all patients.
