AI takes on arthritis: could computers Out-Diagnose doctors?
NCT ID NCT07153315
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study will test whether artificial intelligence can accurately tell the difference between inflammatory arthritis (like rheumatoid arthritis) and degenerative arthritis (like osteoarthritis) in people aged 60 and older. Researchers will compare the AI's analysis of X-rays, MRIs, or ultrasounds against expert rheumatologists' diagnoses. If the AI proves reliable, it could become a tool to help doctors diagnose joint diseases more quickly and accurately.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
AI-assisted imaging analysis
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a faster, more reliable way to diagnose arthritis types in older adults, improving treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 140 participants. The AI may not perform as well in real-world settings or with different imaging equipment.
