AI writing coach aims to ease teen grief in landmark trial
NCT ID NCT07589088
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether an AI-assisted writing program can help Chinese teenagers (ages 10-19) who are struggling with prolonged grief after losing a loved one. Participants will complete three guided writing sessions over six days, with some receiving personalized AI feedback. The goal is to see if the AI support reduces grief, depression, and anxiety better than writing alone or free writing.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
AI-assisted grief-focused guided narrative writing
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a low-cost, scalable way to help grieving teens manage prolonged grief symptoms without needing a therapist.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial with only 126 participants, so results may not apply widely. The AI feedback is unproven, and the intervention is brief (6 days), so lasting benefits are uncertain.
