Can online training ease Dementia-Related behaviors in nursing homes?
NCT ID NCT06636214
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study will adapt and test an online communication training program called CHATO for nursing home staff who care for people with dementia. The goal is to improve how staff interact with residents, which may reduce behavioral symptoms like agitation or rejection of care. Researchers will enroll 40 nursing homes and up to 1,200 staff members to see if the training leads to better outcomes for residents.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Online communication education program (CHATO-I)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide an effective, scalable training program to improve communication and reduce distressing behaviors in people with dementia living in nursing homes.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage adaptation study, not a test of a new drug or cure. Results may vary across different nursing homes, and the training may not lead to lasting changes in staff behavior or resident outcomes.
