Could home hospital care keep dementia patients out of the ER?

NCT ID NCT06819852

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study will test whether providing acute hospital care at home, instead of in a traditional hospital, can help people with moderate to severe dementia spend more days at home after an acute illness. Researchers will randomly assign 200 participants to either receive home-based acute care or standard hospital care. The main goal is to see if home care increases the number of days at home within 30 days of an acute care episode.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Acute hospital care at home (home visits and on-demand evaluation)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a way for people with dementia to receive acute medical care at home instead of in a hospital, potentially reducing stress and complications.

What could go wrong

This is a relatively small trial (200 people) and only includes those with a family caregiver nearby. The results may not apply to everyone with dementia, and home care may not be suitable for all acute illnesses.
