Could a simple belt save lives in cardiac arrest?

NCT ID NCT07573566

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether an external abdominal tourniquet can temporarily block blood flow to the lower body during cardiac arrest, redirecting it to the brain and heart. Researchers will try it on 5 adults with non-traumatic cardiac arrest outside a hospital. The goal is to see if the device can be applied quickly and whether it improves oxygen delivery to vital organs.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Abdominal aortic tourniquet (external device)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to improve blood flow to the brain and heart during cardiac arrest, potentially increasing survival chances.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, tiny study (only 5 participants) with no control group. It only tests feasibility, not whether it actually saves lives. Risks include device complications or delays in standard care.
