Can a nerve drug speed burn healing? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT06596434

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This Phase 2 trial tests whether 4-aminopyridine, a drug already used for other conditions, can help second-degree burns heal faster. Researchers will give the drug or a placebo to 200 adults with fresh burns and track healing rate and scarring. The goal is to see if this safe, existing drug can improve recovery after a burn injury.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

4-Aminopyridine (also known as 4-AP or dalfampridine)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a new way to help second-degree burns heal faster and reduce scarring.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 2 trial with 200 people, so results are still early. The drug may not speed healing more than a placebo, and side effects are possible.
