Anaplastic astrocytoma
MONDO:0016684Anaplastic astrocytoma is a rare, high-grade, malignant glial tumor, histologically characterized by abundance of pleomorphic astrocytes and multiple mitotic figures, often associated with diffuse infiltration of the surrounding tissue, considerable edema and mass effect and involvement of the contralateral brain. Depending on the primary localization of the tumor, patients can present with signs of raised intracranial pressure (headache, vomiting, papilledema), seizures, progressive neurological deficits, and/or behavioral changes. The tumor is most commonly localized in the frontal and temporal lobes, brain stem and spinal cord.
Also known as: anaplastic astrocytoma, astrocytoma, anaplastic, malignant, grade III astrocytic neoplasm, grade III astrocytic tumor, grade III astrocytic tumour, grade III astrocytoma, malignant astrocytoma

Can a modified herpes virus outsmart brain cancer?
Disease control CompletedThis phase 1 trial tests a genetically engineered virus called C134, made from a herpes simplex virus, in people with recurrent malignant glioma, a type of brain cancer. The virus is injected directly into the tumor, where it aims to infect and kill cancer cells while also trigge…

Sound waves and light drug target deadly brain tumors in early trial
Disease control CompletedThis early-phase trial tested a new treatment for aggressive brain tumors called high-grade glioma. Sixteen patients received a drug (5-ALA) plus focused ultrasound to activate the drug inside the tumor, a few days before standard surgery and chemo-radiation. The main goal was to…
