First seen Nov 17, 2025 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 33 times
Summary
This study compares cranberry tablets to the antibiotic nitrofurantoin for preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women after pelvic surgery. About 142 women having surgery for pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence will be randomly assigned to take either cranberry capsules or nitrofurantoin for a short time after their operation. The goal is to see if the natural cranberry option works as well as the standard antibiotic to keep UTIs away.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Cranberry tablets and nitrofurantoin
What this could lead to
If cranberry tablets work as well as nitrofurantoin, women could have a natural, antibiotic-free option to prevent UTIs after pelvic surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center trial with 142 participants. Cranberry may not be as effective as antibiotics, and results may not apply to all women.
