Can a single dose of zoledronic acid safely treat bone loss in dialysis patients?
NCT ID NCT07741136
First seen Aug 03, 2026 · Last updated Aug 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial investigates how the drug zoledronic acid is processed in the body of people with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis and also have osteoporosis. It aims to find the best dose—either 2.5 mg or 5 mg—given as a single intravenous injection during a dialysis session. Researchers will measure drug levels in blood and dialysis fluid to understand how much is removed by dialysis and how the drug affects bone health over 12 months. The study includes 24 adults: 16 on dialysis and 8 with milder kidney disease as a comparison group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- zoledronic acid (an intravenous bisphosphonate drug given as a single dose)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could establish a safe and effective dosing strategy for zoledronic acid in dialysis patients, potentially reducing fractures and improving quality of life in this high-risk group.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-phase study focused on drug levels, not long-term outcomes. The drug may behave differently in dialysis patients, and there are risks like low calcium or phosphate levels, which the trial carefully monitors.
