Dental implant showdown: which material fends off bacteria better?
NCT ID NCT06075017
First seen May 21, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 4 times
Summary
This pilot study compares how much bacteria (biofilm) builds up on zirconia versus titanium dental implants. Researchers will place 15 zirconia and 15 titanium single implants in 40 patients and measure biofilm levels, gum health, and bone loss at 3, 6, and 12 months. The goal is to see if one material leads to fewer infections and better long-term outcomes.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dental implant (zirconia or titanium)
What this could lead to
If zirconia implants collect less harmful bacteria, they could reduce the risk of implant infections and improve long-term dental implant success.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The findings are observational and won't directly prove which material is better for all patients.
