Choice over control: letting dieters pick their strategy may boost success

NCT ID NCT06521021

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study tests whether giving people a choice between two weight management strategies—avoiding tempting foods or learning to resist them—helps them stick with the program better than being assigned a strategy. Sixty adults with overweight or obesity will either choose their approach or be randomly assigned. The goal is to see if choice improves adherence and weight loss outcomes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

behavioral intervention (home food environment modification and inhibitory control training)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a more effective, personalized approach to weight management by letting people choose the strategy that fits them best.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. It tests behavioral strategies, not a drug, so the impact may be modest and hard to sustain long-term.
