Gaming for weight loss: new study tests if points and social support help shed pounds

NCT ID NCT05176847

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested whether adding social gaming (earning points and supporting each other) to a weight loss app helps adults with overweight or obesity and at least 3 risk factors for type 2 diabetes lose more weight over 12 months. About 240 adults used a mobile app to track food and exercise, with half also getting game-like features to boost social support. The main goal was to see if the gaming group lost more weight and felt more supported.
