Could your smartwatch predict a stroke?
NCT ID NCT05795842
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a smartwatch algorithm can detect atrial fibrillation (AF), an irregular heartbeat that often goes unnoticed and raises stroke risk. Researchers will enroll 500 stroke survivors who will wear a standard heart monitor and a study-provided smartwatch for 30 days. The goal is to see if the smartwatch data can reliably identify AF, potentially offering a cheaper and easier monitoring option.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
MOTO 360 smartwatch with LifeQ firmware
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide an affordable, easy-to-use way to detect hidden heart rhythm problems using smartwatches, helping prevent strokes.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study with only 500 participants, and the algorithm may not be as accurate as standard medical monitors. Motion artifacts could affect reliability.
