NCT ID NCT06588218
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether eating 2.5 cups of fresh watermelon every day for six weeks can improve gut health, including increasing good bacteria, and boost heart health in young adults aged 18-30 who are overweight or have obesity. Participants will be randomly assigned to eat either watermelon or a low-fat control snack. Researchers will measure changes in gut and mouth bacteria, digestion speed, and blood vessel function.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a simple dietary change like eating watermelon can improve gut and heart health in young adults with overweight or obesity.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 36 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The effects may be small or no different from the control snack.
