Tiny study probes hidden sodium storage in kidney patients

NCT ID NCT06872645

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study at Yale University is testing whether the body can store sodium without holding onto extra water, a concept called 'water-free sodium storage.' Ten adults on peritoneal dialysis with heart failure will receive either a special dextrose solution or standard dialysis fluid for five days. Researchers will measure sodium removal to see if this storage happens and if it matters for health.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

5% dextrose in sterile water

What this could lead to

If it works, this could help us understand how the body handles sodium, potentially improving fluid management in heart failure and dialysis patients.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-phase study with only 10 participants, so results may not apply widely. It is designed to test a theory, not to treat a condition.
