Warm dye may ease pain during key fertility exam

NCT ID NCT07226310

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether warming the contrast dye used in a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) — a standard X-ray test for blocked fallopian tubes — can reduce pain and cramping during the procedure. About 240 women aged 18–45 will be randomly assigned to receive either warm or room-temperature dye. The goal is to see if warm dye leads to less discomfort and fewer false signs of blockage, which can happen when the tubes spasm from the cold liquid.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

warmed contrast dye

What this could lead to

If it works, this could make a common fertility test less painful and more accurate by reducing false blockages.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small trial. Warming the dye may not meaningfully reduce pain or improve test results, and the effect may vary from person to person.
