Could VR headsets replace classrooms for nurse training?

NCT ID NCT07677592

First seen Jul 01, 2026 · Last updated Jul 01, 2026

Summary

This study compares immersive virtual reality (VR) training to traditional classroom lectures for teaching nurses how to care for stomas—surgical openings on the body. About 100 nurses will be randomly assigned to either two VR sessions or one classroom session. Researchers will measure their knowledge, skills, confidence, and satisfaction before, right after, and one month after training.

Active substance

immersive virtual reality training program

What this could lead to

If effective, VR training could become a scalable, engaging way to teach nurses complex clinical skills like stoma care, potentially improving patient outcomes.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with 100 nurses at one hospital. Results may not apply broadly, and VR can cause discomfort in some users.
