Can virtual nature walks boost brain health in older adults?
NCT ID NCT07802392
First seen Sep 03, 2026 · Last updated Sep 04, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether an immersive virtual reality program using nature scenes can improve cognitive and emotional well-being in older adults with mild to moderate cognitive impairment. Participants will attend 10 group sessions that combine virtual nature environments with mindfulness, cognitive stimulation, and breathing exercises. Researchers will measure changes in cognitive function, anxiety, daily functioning, and quality of life before and after the program. The study also includes an initial phase with healthy volunteers to refine the virtual environments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Immersive virtual reality program using nature-based environments, combined with mindfulness, cognitive stimulation, and breathing techniques
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a drug-free way to support cognitive function and emotional well-being in older adults with mild to moderate cognitive impairment, potentially aiding healthy aging.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early, non-randomized study without a control group, so results may not be conclusive. The intervention is short-term, and any benefits might not last or generalize to broader populations.
