VR headsets could stop gagging at the dentist
NCT ID NCT07236138
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether watching a short animated movie through a VR headset can help control the gag reflex and reduce anxiety in adults during dental X-rays. Thirty patients each had two X-rays: one with standard care and one with VR distraction. Researchers measured gagging severity, anxiety levels, and patient satisfaction to see if VR makes the experience more comfortable.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Virtual reality (VR) headset showing an animated movie
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, non-drug way to help patients with a strong gag reflex feel more comfortable during dental X-rays.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The effect may be modest or not work for severe gagging.
