Vitamin D3 may tame asthma in overweight teens

NCT ID NCT05431920

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether vitamin D3 supplements can improve asthma control in adolescents aged 12-17 who have obesity, non-allergic asthma, and vitamin D deficiency. Participants receive either a high or standard daily dose of vitamin D3 for three months. Researchers will measure asthma symptoms, lung function, and asthma attack rates to see if supplementation helps.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Vitamin D3 (oral supplement)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost vitamin D supplement to help control asthma in teens with obesity and vitamin D deficiency.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 264 participants. Results may not apply to all teens, and high-dose vitamin D can cause side effects like kidney stones or high calcium levels.
