Vitamin d levels after heart attack: a simple fix for major risks?

NCT ID NCT02996721

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether getting vitamin D levels above 40 ng/mL after a heart attack could reduce the chance of death, another heart attack, stroke, or heart failure hospitalization. About 634 heart attack patients were split into two groups: one got standard care, and the other got extra vitamin D3 to raise their levels. The goal was to see if normalizing vitamin D makes a real difference in preventing major heart-related events.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to lower the risk of serious heart problems after a heart attack.

What could go wrong

This is a completed Phase 4 trial with 634 participants, but the results may not apply to everyone. Vitamin D is generally safe, but high doses can cause side effects.
