Virtual reality may ease pain of egg retrieval without extra drugs

NCT ID NCT05528497

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether wearing a virtual reality headset during oocyte (egg) retrieval under local anesthesia can lower pain and anxiety. About 90 women undergoing IVF or egg donation who choose local anesthesia will be randomly assigned to use the VR headset or not. The goal is to see if this simple, non-invasive tool can improve comfort and satisfaction, potentially offering a safer alternative to general anesthesia.

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a non-drug way to ease pain and anxiety during oocyte retrieval, potentially making local anesthesia a more comfortable choice.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with 90 participants. The VR effect may be modest or not better than standard care, and not all patients may tolerate the headset.
