Virtual reality could replace painkillers for kidney stone patients

NCT ID NCT06616324

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether wearing a virtual reality headset and noise-cancelling headphones during shock wave treatment for kidney stones can lower pain and anxiety. 72 adults scheduled for the procedure will be randomly assigned to either use VR or receive standard care alone. The goal is to see if VR can distract patients enough to reduce their need for pain medication.

Virtual Reality headset and noise-cancelling headphones

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a drug-free way to ease pain and anxiety during kidney stone treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 72 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. VR may not work for all patients or could cause discomfort.
